Purchase and Transport

The project began with the purchase of a 1986 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1700L in Victoria on 31 December 2025. Following transport to Narrabri, NSW, the vehicle underwent its first inspection, revealing a solid foundation

Chapter 1 – Purchase & Transport

For many years, owning a Mercedes-Benz Unimog had been on the bucket list. The combination of legendary off-road capability, military heritage and expedition potential made the U1700L an ideal platform for a future overland adventure.

After spending considerable time researching available vehicles throughout Australia, a 1986 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1700L became available in Victoria. The vehicle appeared complete, running and driving, and importantly had was in my price range.

Kids and a dog loaded the 1600km 2 day trip to say G'day was undertaken to check out this weapon.

New Year's Eve Purchase

On 31 December 2025 the decision was made to purchase the Unimog together with a spare set of tyres and rims.

While the truck appeared to be a solid starting point, there was still a degree of uncertainty. As with any 40-year-old vehicle, especially one with military origins, the true condition would only become apparent after a detailed inspection.

The purchase marked the official beginning of what would become my unimog project

Following the purchase, arrangements were made to transport the vehicle from Shepparton, Victoria, to Narrabri, New South Wales. Cam Shaw took care of this and what a legend. Need anything moved anywhere is Australia Cams your man

Transporting a vehicle of this size and age is always an anxious experience. The truck had not yet been thoroughly inspected and there were still many unknowns surrounding its condition.

Despite these concerns, the Unimog arrived safely and without incident.

First Impressions

With the truck finally home, the initial inspection process could begin.

At first glance the vehicle presented reasonably well. The cab was complete, the chassis appeared sound and the vehicle was running and driving.

However years of use, modifications and deferred maintenance the machine would require a comprehensive inspection approach to ensure mechanical integrity

Looking Ahead

The immediate objective was to establish a clear understanding of the vehicle's condition and determine exactly what work would be required before it could be considered reliable and roadworthy.

The next chapter focuses on the detailed inspection process, uncovering hidden defects, evaluating previous repairs and developing a restoration strategy for the project.

Lessons Learnt

  • Buy the best vehicle you can afford, but expect surprises regardless.

  • Transporting the vehicle home is only the beginning of the journey.

  • Initial appearances rarely tell the full story of a 40-year-old Unimog.

  • Document everything from day one.

  • Have fun
