mogitis / .mɒɡɪtɪs / (noun). A chronic disorder in which the affected individual feels compelled to purchase, dismantle, inspect, repair and modify Unimogs, regardless of time, cost or practicality.

Purchase and Transport
The project began with the purchase of a 1986 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1700L in Victoria on 31 December 2025. Following transport to Narrabri, NSW, the vehicle underwent its first inspection, revealing a solid foundation
Assessment and Inspection
Once in Narrabri, the Unimog underwent its detailed inspection. Initially numerous mechanical, electrical and age-related issues, ultimately setting the scene for a comprehensive mechanical integrity check.
Cab
The cab restoration focused on safety, functionality and corrosion prevention. Seats, seat belts, doors, windows, seals and ventilation components were inspected, repaired or replaced while hidden rust and age-related defects were progressively uncovered and addressed.
Chassis and Tray
The tray was removed to allow full access to the chassis and underlying components for inspection and refurbishment. With the tray out of the way, the condition of the chassis rails, crossmembers, mounting points and associated hardware could be properly assessed. This stage of the project focused on cleaning, inspection and identifying any areas requiring repair or attention before reassembly, ensuring the truck has a solid foundation for the remainder of the restoration.
Engine
The engine chapter focuses on inspecting, repairing and servicing the OM352A engine and its supporting systems while access was available during the restoration. Although the engine appeared to operate well, every accessible component was inspected to verify its condition, identify defects and establish a known mechanical baseline.
Cooling System
With access to the front of the engine improving as surrounding components were removed, the radiator and associated cooling system could be dismantled and assessed properly. Rather than replacing parts based on age or appearance, each component was inspected, tested and refurbished where practical, with replacement reserved only for items that could no longer provide reliable service.
Electrical System
The Unimog's electrical system is relatively simple, making faults easier to diagnose but no less important to rectify. After decades of military service, storage and previous repairs, a number of electrical issues had developed including inoperative lighting, damaged wiring, poor earths and unreliable sender circuits and components
